The White Villages route is very well known, especially among people who love architecture and enjoy scenery. If you plan to make this trip and see a little more of our country, you must be wondering where to stay on the white villages route. We will help you plan your trip, but first let’s get to know these villages a little.

White in these villages is much more than a colour; for them it means freshness. The houses are white because they cover their façades with lime to fight the heat. The route is made up of 19 villages where the white façades decorated with flowers and the landscapes you see along the way create a spectacle for the eyes.

The 19 places that are part of the white villages route in Spain are: Alcalá del Valle, Algar, Algodonales, Arcos de la Frontera, Benaocaz, Bornos, El Bosque, El Gastor, Espera, Grazalema, Olvera, Prado del Rey, Puerto Serrano, Setenil de las Bodegas, Torre Alháquime, Ubrique, Villaluenga del Rosario, Villamartín and Zahara de la Sierra.

You can find where to stay on the white villages route in each of them. However, where you stay will depend on your itinerary, as you can choose to stay in these villages and spend your whole holiday there, or see the white villages route and at the same time enjoy the beaches and the city.

Arcos de la Frontera, where we start the white route

It is known as the gateway to the white villages of Cádiz. As you would expect, the first thing that will catch your eye is the white houses. However, the architecture created during the Christian period of this village makes it a place you cannot miss if you love history.

You should visit Plaza del Cabildo, Cuesta de Belén and the Church of San Pedro. As you can imagine, what there is to see in Arcos de la Frontera is its monuments and old buildings that survived the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

The routes around Grazalema are a must

One of the first places to visit in Grazalema is the Mirador de Asomaderos, next to the tourist office. The main monument you will find in Grazalema is the Monument to the Toro de Cuerda, a tribute to the village’s traditional festival.

In the centre of the village you will find Plaza de España, where the Church of La Aurora stands. A Renaissance-era church that suffered in the Spanish Civil War. You should also visit the Church of San Juan, which is believed to have been built on a mosque.

We recommend you pass by the Church of San José and from there go to the Mirador de los Peñascos. As you will see, the architecture and viewpoints are key parts of the Grazalema route, making it one of the prettiest white villages.

Olvera, a village in Cádiz

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, in Plaza del Ayuntamiento, has a viewpoint that was built after the sacristan’s house was demolished.

The Arab castle is another place you should visit, mainly because from there you can enjoy the landscape of the municipality. Although it was built at the end of the 12th century, you can see many Christian features because of renovations since it was taken by Castilian troops. The Arab castle has been a cultural asset since 1985.

An obligatory stop at Setenil de las Bodegas

The main attraction of this village on the white villages route is that many of its houses are built under a rock. The church you should visit in Setenil de las Bodegas is the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.

This church was built on an old mosque and has a 17th-century crucified Christ and a silk-and-gold chasuble donated by the Catholic Monarchs.

Here, we recommend you go to the El Lizón viewpoint. To get there, you climb the steps of the Manuel Galán gardens. We also recommend seeing the main monument, the Torreón del Homenaje, as it is the only trace left of the Almohad fortress of the 12th and 13th centuries.

Let’s finish the tour with the Zahara de la Sierra route

This village is famous for the many viewpoints it has. It is surrounded by walls and towers, but only the Torre del Homenaje is preserved in perfect condition.

In Plaza del Rey you will find a viewpoint and the 17th-century Church of Santa María de la Mesa, which represents the religious architecture of Andalusia. You get there along Calle San Juan, where there are craft shops and hotels where you can stay on the white villages route.

Zahara de la Sierra was also declared a historic ensemble.

If you are going to spend your holiday in the white villages you don’t need to worry about where to stay on the white villages route, since it is such a touristy area that the service of its hotels is generally very good.
