At Villas Flamenco our aim is for you to have a completely unforgettable holiday. If you are planning a weekend trip to Cádiz, we give you a list of all the activities you can do on your visit to this Andalusian city, so we want to answer the question: what to do for a weekend in Cádiz?

Below you will see a list of the best plans for a weekend in this beautiful Andalusian city:

Climb the Torre Tavira and enjoy the views

We start with one of the activities you cannot miss on your weekend trip to Cádiz: climbing the Torre de Tavira. From there you can enjoy the best views of the whole city. This tower stands about 45 metres above sea level, the highest point of the old part of the city.

If you go to this tower, the views are not the only thing you can enjoy. Inside you will find one of the attractions that draws the most tourists, the camera obscura. It is a mechanism that projects moving images of everything going on outside.

If you want to go during a weekend in Cádiz and enjoy this plan, it is best to book in advance. The viewpoint, however, can also be visited without a ticket. Opening hours are 10 am to 6 pm from October to April, and 10 am to 8 pm from May to September. The fee for the camera obscura is 6 euros.

Visit the city’s cathedral

You cannot head to Cádiz for a weekend and not visit the impressive cathedral of the city. It is true that it is not the most impressive and monumental in all of Spain, but it has charm. There you can see the different mixtures of styles, such as Baroque or Neoclassical. And if you visit on a sunny day, you will see the golden tiles of the dome shine.

At Villas Flamenco we recommend that, besides visiting the inside of the cathedral, you climb the Clock Tower. There you can enjoy a great panoramic view of the whole city. The opening hours can also vary depending on the time of year: 10 am to 7 pm from November to March, except Sundays, when it is 1 pm to 7 pm. In April, May, June, September and October the hours are 10 am to 8 pm, except Sundays, when it is 1:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

During July and August the hours are 10 am to 9 pm, except Sundays, when it changes to 1:30 pm to 9 pm. One of the compulsory visits you must make on your stay in the city.

Enjoy a sunset from La Caleta beach

If Cádiz stands out for anything, it is the many impressive beaches it has. So if you are thinking of spending a weekend in Cádiz, one of the plans to do is to go and watch the sunset at La Caleta beach. You can do this plan in summer and winter alike, and experience a completely unique moment.

Stroll through the wonderful La Viña neighbourhood

If Cádiz has become famous around the world for anything, it is the incredible carnivals held every year. So if you want to spend a weekend in Cádiz and don’t know where to go, you should take a walk through every corner of the La Viña neighbourhood.

It is considered the heart of the city, as it is the place where the famous carnivals are held. This area used to be the old fishermen’s quarter and its streets are narrow, cobbled and full of bars and restaurants that show the true essence of the city.

Among the many corners this neighbourhood hides, you will find Calle Virgen de la Palma, lined entirely with palm trees, which also has the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma. Undoubtedly one of the prettiest corners hidden in the city of Cádiz.

Try the city’s best dishes

One of the best plans you can carry out during a weekend in Cádiz is to go to one of the many bars and restaurants in the city and try its exquisite food. Some of the dishes you must try are shrimp fritters, fried fish or the delicious marinated dogfish (cazón en adobo).

It is best to go to the walled part of the city, as many bars and restaurants are concentrated there. To be exact, if you want a good tapas outing, you should go to Calle Virgen de la Palma, Plaza de San Martín or Plaza de las Flores. You will have a completely unique experience that will leave you wanting to come back.

Another plan we recommend for your weekend is to enjoy the incredible nightlife. It is true that all year round you will find a great offer of bars, pubs and clubs, but in the summer months nightlife picks up quite a lot. If you travel with friends you cannot miss going out at night to dance and have a few drinks.

Visit the Genovés park

Another of the places you will find within the old walled part of the city is the Genovés park. If you spend 3 days in Cádiz, you should walk around this incredible park considered a tropical garden. It is a very well-kept botanical park, the perfect place to go with your partner as it is very romantic.

There you can find lakes, waterfalls, stone sculptures and various palm trees whose origins date back to the 18th century. If you finally take a stroll in this beautiful park, you won’t regret it. You can have a moment of tranquillity while enjoying the beauty hidden in this corner of the city.

Learn history at the Museo de Cádiz

If Cádiz is characterised by anything, it is the great history of the city, considered the oldest city in all of Europe. The best way to immerse yourself and get to know its whole history in depth is to visit the museum during your weekend in Cádiz. There you can learn about the city’s whole path, from prehistoric times to Roman times.

One of the reasons not to miss a visit of this kind is two works considered very valuable: two sarcophagi of Phoenician origin inside the museum that will help you get to know the city’s history better. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am to 9 pm, and Sundays and public holidays from 9 am to 3 pm. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Admission is also free for all citizens of the European Union, while for those of other nationalities the price is only 1.50 euros.

Look at the Santa Catalina fortress

If during your weekend in the Tacita de Plata you decide to visit La Caleta beach, next to it you will find an impressive fortress, the Castle of Santa Catalina. It dates back to the 16th century, offering an impressive view of the whole of La Caleta beach and much of the Cádiz coast.

If you are thinking of visiting this place, you should know that entry is free, and you can walk around the different battlements and bastions. One reason it is worth visiting this castle is the good state of conservation of all its elements. Opening hours vary according to the time of year: in autumn and winter 11 am to 7:30 pm, while in spring and summer 11 am to 8:30 pm.

Visit the Gran Teatro Falla

Another place you must visit during your weekend in Cádiz is the famous Gran Teatro Falla. It is the most imposing in the whole city and is very famous as the place where the Cádiz Carnival contest is held. Chirigotas, choirs, quartets and comparsas gather there.

If you travel in January and February, you can enjoy the full splendour of the carnival in the city. During the rest of the year, many performances take place at the theatre. For this reason, a plan that cannot be missing from your weekend in Cádiz is to visit the theatre and enjoy a good show.

Walk along the seafront promenade

If Cádiz stands out for anything, it is having one of the prettiest seafront promenades in the whole country. Once you have walked through every corner of the historic centre, you can go to the promenade and enjoy the impressive views of the Atlantic Ocean.

On your walk you can circle the whole old town while watching the various boats moored in the port. If there is a lot of wind during your weekend in Cádiz, going to the promenade is one of the activities people like most. You can watch the strong surf break, creating completely unique scenes.

Go to El Puerto de Santa María

If you have a car and time during your weekend in Cádiz, one of the excursions to make is to visit the famous town of El Puerto de Santa María. It is considered one of the jewels of the province and is only 20 kilometres from the city. That makes it possible to visit and come back in a single day.

There you can be left completely open-mouthed by the more than 600 palace houses. Inside you can also see how well preserved the traditional patios are, with different plants and flowers. Undoubtedly one of the areas that attracts the most tourism for its beauty and for the incredible beaches around it.

Take a free tour of the city

If you are thinking of spending a weekend in Cádiz but have no idea which places to visit, we recommend one of the many Free Tours held in the city. With this you can be accompanied by a tour guide who will explain the whole history of the city as you walk around it.

To avoid missing out, it is best to book before travelling. These tours are free, but guides usually live off tourists’ tips. So the best thing to do if you liked the route is to tip the guide.
